Rehabilitation Following Surgery, Joint Replacement or Fracture

Recovering from surgery or a fracture can take time. Even after the initial healing period, you may experience pain, stiffness, weakness, swelling and reduced confidence in the affected area.

A structured rehabilitation programme can help you work towards the activities that matter to you, whether that means walking comfortably, returning to work, getting back to the gym or resuming sport.

I provide individual post-operative and fracture rehabilitation at Huddersfield Physiotherapy Clinic.

Post-operative Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation may be suitable following:

  • Knee or hip replacement
  • Arthroscopic surgery
  • Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
  • Meniscal surgery
  • Shoulder surgery
  • Tendon or ligament repair
  • Ankle, wrist or other fractures
  • Immobilisation in a cast or boot
  • Other orthopaedic procedures

The timing and content of rehabilitation will depend on your operation or injury, healing times and any guidance provided by your consultant.

Your initial assessment

At your first appointment, we will discuss:

  • The nature and date of your surgery or injury
  • Any post-operative instructions or restrictions
  • Your current pain and swelling
  • Your current pain and swelling
  • Movement and strength
  • Walking and everyday activities
  • Your work, hobbies and sporting goals
  • What you would most like to achieve

Please bring any relevant consultant letters, operation details or rehabilitation protocols with you.

Your rehabilitation programme

Depending on your stage of recovery, treatment may include:

  • Advice about pain and swelling management
  • Exercises to restore movement
  • Progressive strengthening
  • Walking and gait rehabilitation
  • Balance and control exercises
  • Guidance on using or reducing walking aids
  • Gradual return to work and everyday activity
  • Gym or sport-specific rehabilitation
  • Hands-on treatment where appropriate

Your programme will be progressed according to your response and any surgical restrictions.

Rehabilitation tailored to your goals

Recovery is not only about achieving a particular measurement in the clinic. It is about helping you return to the activities that matter in your own life.

For one person, that may mean managing stairs safely. For another, it may be returning to manual work, running or competitive sport.

Where necessary, I can communicate with your consultant, GP or insurer to help coordinate your rehabilitation, subject to your consent.
