Meet David Scrivener
I’m David, a Chartered Physiotherapist with more than 20 years of experience helping people recover from injury, manage pain and get back to the activities that matter to them.
I work across both private practice and the NHS, which gives me a varied and enjoyable mix of clinical work. One day I might be helping someone return to running or sport; the next, I may be supporting somebody with persistent back pain, osteoarthritis or rehabilitation following surgery.
Whatever brings you to the clinic, my aim is to provide clear, practical advice and treatment that is built around you.
Qualifications
I graduated from Keele University in 2004 with a 1 st class BSc Honours degree in Physiotherapy.
Since qualifying, I have continued to develop my knowledge through postgraduate training and regular professional development. This includes further training in musculoskeletal assessment and treatment, injection therapy, running gait analysis, rehabilitation and shockwave therapy.
I am:
- A Chartered Physiotherapist
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council
- A member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
Over 20 years of experience
I began my career within the NHS, completing a range of physiotherapy rotations before specialising in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
From 2008 to 2011, I worked as Head Academy Physiotherapist at Leeds United FootballClub. This involved assessing and treating academy players, planning their rehabilitation and helping them return safely to training and competitive football. It was a busy and rewarding role that gave me valuable experience of sporting injuries, rehabilitation and working as part of a wider medical and coaching team.
I have also worked in private practice since 2011, treating a wide variety of joint, muscle and tendon problems.
Alongside my private clinic, I currently work as a First Contact Physiotherapist within GP practices. In this role, I am often the first healthcare professional to assess patients with a musculoskeletal problem. This involves identifying the likely cause of their symptoms, screening for anything that may require further investigation and arranging referrals, scans or specialist input when appropriate.
The combination of NHS and private work gives me a broad clinical perspective. It means I regularly see everything from recent injuries and sporting problems to osteoarthritis, persistent pain and more complex conditions.
My approach to treatment
Honesty is at the heart of how I work.
I will always give you a straightforward explanation of what I think is happening, what your options are and what you can realistically expect from treatment.
Not every problem requires a long course of physiotherapy. Sometimes a thorough assessment, reassurance and a clear plan are what is needed. If I believe physiotherapy can help, I will explain how. If I think you would benefit from speaking to your GP, having further investigations or seeing another healthcare professional, I will be equally open about that.
Treatment is tailored to the individual and may include advice, hands-on treatment, exercise rehabilitation, activity modification, shockwave therapy or support with gradually returning to work, exercise or sport.
The aim is not simply to provide treatment during your appointment. It is to help you understand the problem and feel confident about what you can do to improve it.
Time to listen properly
Physiotherapy appointments are 60 minutes as standard.
This gives us time to talk through your symptoms properly, complete a thorough assessment, explain the findings and begin treatment without the appointment feeling rushed.
It also allows us to look beyond where it hurts and consider other factors that may be contributing to the problem, including your work, training, general health, previous injuries and personal goals.
