Sports injuries I commonly assess and treat
These include:
- Muscle strains
- Ligament sprains
- Knee and ankle injuries
- Shoulder injuries
- Tendon pain
- Joint pain and stiffness
- Injuries caused by falls or contact
- Persistent pain during training
- Recurring injuries
- Rehabilitation after surgery or fracture
I work with people involved in football, rugby, running, cycling, gym training, racket sports and many other activities.
Understanding your injury
The assessment considers more than simply where it hurts. We will discuss:
- How the injury happened
- Your current symptoms
- Recent changes in training
- Your sport and playing position
- Previous injuries
- Your current strength and movement
- Your short- and long-term goals
The physical assessment may include movement, strength, balance, flexibility and sport-specific tasks. I will explain the likely nature of the problem and whether further investigation may be appropriate.
Treatment and rehabilitation
Depending on your injury, treatment may include:
- Advice about modifying training
- A personalised rehabilitation programme
- Strength and conditioning exercises
- Mobility work
- Balance and movement-control exercises
- Hands-on treatment where appropriate
- A gradual return-to-running or return-to-sport plan
- Shockwave therapy for selected tendon conditions
Treatment is designed to help restore the physical qualities required by your particular activity rather than simply waiting for pain to settle.
Returning to sport
Feeling better does not always mean that an injury is ready for full training or competition. Where possible, rehabilitation should prepare you for the speed, strength, change of direction, endurance or impact required by your sport.
I can help you progress through these stages and make a more informed decision about returning to activity.
